6-Cycle is a 6-week character- and bike-building youth program that empowers teenagers (8th-12th Grade) to learn more about themselves and bicycle mechanics. Each week the course curriculum focuses on a different character strength and bike component that makes it roll.

Character Strengths

We start each session discussing a new character strength, modeled after Angela Duckworth’s Character Lab playbooks, that is essential for success in life. Participants are given a small assignment to practice that character strength throughout the week.

Bicycle Mechanics

After a small group demonstration lesson, students work one-on-one with mentor mechanics to cover every part on their bikes, from bottom brackets to derailleurs to re-wiring brake cables.

I earn a bike?!

You sure do! All of Village Wrench’s bicycles are donated and rehabbed; students will choose one of these bikes the first night, which they’ll keep at the shop and work on each week. After completion of the course, students take home the bikes they overhauled as well as a helmet and lock.

Anything else I need to know?

There is a $25-$50 sliding fee for the class (pay what you think it’s worth!). We encourage students to earn this money through saving or odd jobs, but scholarships are available; if you need it, be sure to note this on your application. Students must provide their own transportation, and you may want to eat dinner before you come.

Bonus! Work at the Village Wrench Bike Shop

Graduates also become eligible to apply for a paid part-time position in our workshop that focuses on job-skill and mechanic training. More information is provided at the end of the course.

6-Cycle Summer Camps

In the summer, we will run 6-Cycle as a week-long camp for middle school students, partnering with low-income youth programs in Greenville. We don’t have one-on-one mentors, but it’s still a whole lot of fun, and we like to ride with them for the rest of the summer!
